The Eagle Academy Foundation challenges systemic barriers, thereby empowering young men of color to achieve their desired educational, career, and life outcomes. We deliver strategic direct-impact work and advance institutional change toward equity.
In 2004, a group of educators, parents, community leaders, and corporate partners, led by the One Hundred Black Men, Inc. opened the first Eagle Academy for Young Men in the South Bronx. This was the first single-sex boys public school to open in New York City in approximately 30 years, with (now Chancellor) David C. Banks serving as its Founding Principal.
In 2005, The Eagle Academy Foundation was established to improve educational outcomes for more at-risk young men by providing professional development to school administrators and teachers within and outside of the Eagle Academy network.
EAF established The Eagle Institute in 2016 to scale our professional development efforts nationwide with an aim to reach exponentially more young men of color.
The inaugural Eagle Academy established its roots in the Bronx, offering educational opportunities to 100 young men of color.
In 2008, the expansion continued with the second Eagle Academy making its home in the Brownsville/Ocean Hill area of Brooklyn.
The journey persisted with the third Eagle Academy, inaugurated in Southeast Queens in 2010, furthering our mission.
The fourth Eagle Academy marked its beginning in Newark, New Jersey, in 2012, following an invitation from Senator Cory Booker, who was the Mayor at the time.
2013 witnessed the opening of the fifth Eagle Academy in Harlem, extending our reach within the vibrant heart of New York City.
The sixth and final Eagle Academy was unveiled in Staten Island in 2014, completing our network of schools dedicated to empowering young men of color.
As of September 2020, all of the Eagle Academies for Young Men are at full capacity, serving grades 6-12. Each Eagle Academy features the Eagle Model that includes parental engagement, academic rigor, college preparation, extended day and Saturday programs, rituals, summer programs and mentoring.
5,000+ scholars and alumni are served across all five boroughs in New York City and Newark, NJ.
